Jason di Rosso (my new go-to man since Margaret and David left the building) said he found this ‘anaemic’, but I think it’s a good story movingly told.  And how wonderful to see old age depicted so honestly and compassionately.  Ian McKellan is only as old as the younger version of the Sherlock Holmes character he plays, but he’s utterly convincing as Holmes at 93 too.  I kept wondering ‘who’s that actress playing the housekeeper?’ then the credits reminded me that it’s Laura Linney, an American actress creditably portraying an uneducated war-widow battling to make a future for herself and her young son, also a terrific performance.  But then, as we all know, The Brits Do That Kind Of Thing So Well….
